Weekly Wed – 2/26/2014

Hello paddlers!

Did anyone find buried treasure in their yards today? No? Maybe, it was last week or something. Because I totally lost my buried treasure, so if you find it can you please let me know?

Your news today is focused on one thing: Racing, warm weather, tank tops, flippy floppies, and racing.

1. 2014 Race Schedule The board met last weekend and had a really productive discussion. We will sharing the minutes with you shortly. What we need from you now is to tell us which choice of race you want to do. We’ve agreed upon the following races, but yet! there remains discussion around whether to race in Chicago OR Montreal the weekend of July 26-27. There is a Doodle poll below, but there are some pesky facts that we need to get out of the way first.

Races LR is definitely going to:

1. Boston (June 14-15)

2. Springfield (July 19)

3. Your Choice – Chicago or Montreal (July 26-27)

4. Hartford, CT (August 17)

5. Concord, NH (September 6)

6. San Francisco (September 20-21)

To help you come to a decision, here are some facts that I know about each of the races:

Chicago – A one-day race in it’s third year. It’s about the size of the Boston race (40ish teams). There will be a few really fast teams there and then quite a bit of community teams. It think competition-wise, it will feel like Ithaca or Boston – we’ll be in the middle between 2:00 teams and 3:30 teams. If the format is the same as last year, we’ll do 3 500s in one day. The race website is here. Here’s a map of where Lake Arlington is, in relation to Chicago. So it looks like we’re all going to be renting cars in Illinois, unless Bryan can convince his family to lend us all those minivans parked in their front yard.

Montreal – A two-day race that is in a new incarnation. One group had been running the race for years, and another group just took it over. There are expected to be over 100 teams there. It looks like there are 3 500s on Saturday and then a 2k on Sunday. I’m just telling you that as a fact, not to suggest that we may possibly just not do it if we don’t want to. We race at the Parc Jean Drapeau, where the 1976 Olympics had their rowing competition. It’s about a 5-6 hour drive from Boston (which means you’ll be carpooling and / or renting cars) and we’ll be going to Canada, so you’ll need a passport to get there and come back. The race site is about a 10 minute drive from any of the hotels that we might stay at in downtown Montreal. That race’s website is here.

Ok, Root – Doodle away! Feel free to use your real name, pen name, a made up name or someone else’s name. The poll is here. Please vote by the end of this week.

2. Practice Schedule: There is practice this Thursday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, March 1. Dave and I will also invite those racing in NY to try out our erg on some Sundays, but not this Sunday because we’re not going to be here and I totally don’t trust you around the cats.

See you at the pool!
